They can be purchased from the New School online bookstore, at the Barnes & Noble store at 18th and Fifth, or from online retailers (Amazon links below). Some libraries may also have these books: use worldcat.org to search locally.

Hi folks. Here are the books you’ll need for my section of The Shaping of the Modern World (CORC 1220, section ET6).
These have been ordered from the Brooklyn College Bookstore, but you can also order these books easily online, both used and new. Just make sure (a) you get the right version, and (b) that you leave enough time for shipping so that you have your books in hand by the time the course starts on August 31. Convenient Amazon links are at the bottom of this post.
Two books are required for CORC 1220: (1) The Textbook, and (2) The Reader.

Spielvogel (Latest edition)
(1) The Textbook:
Jackson J. Spielvogel
Western Civilization: A Brief History
Volume II, 5th Edition (or later—may say 7th Edition)
Wadsworth: Cengage: 2011
ISBN: 978-0-495-57149-0
- PLEASE NOTE THE EDITION: I am using the latest edition of this book, which differs substantially in organization from earlier editions (4th Edition and before). Make sure the cover looks like the one pictured here. If you get an earlier edition, you will have difficulty following the assignments.
- Available from Brooklyn College Bookstore, either in person or via their website: http://whywaitforbooks.com
- Available for slightly less from Amazon and other online retailers, but make sure you get the right edition (see below). Use the ISBN above to search for this volume and edition.
- You can rent the textbook online for the semester for about half price. For more info, go to http://cengage.com/wadsworth and search for this book by ISBN (9780495571490, without the hyphens)

The Reader
(2) The Reader:
Brooklyn College Dept. of History
The Shaping of the Modern World
5th Edition
Pearson Custom Publishing: 2007
ISBN: 0-536-48964-5
- There is a new edition this year. It’s largely the same of the previous (4th) edition, but the page numbering will be different.
- Available at the Brooklyn College Bookstore (in person)
- Some are available used online.
- You can get an e-book version of this book at half price. To purchase an access code, go to http://www.pearsoncustom.com/ny/bc_history_smw/

Hi folks. Here are the books you’ll need for History of Ancient Greece (HIA 320).
These have been ordered from the Lehman College Bookstore, but their supply (especially of new copies) may be limited. As an alternative, you can order these books easily online, both used and new. Just make sure (a) you get the right version, and (b) that you leave enough time for shipping so that you have your books in hand by the time the course starts on August 30. Convenient Amazon links are at the bottom of this post.
Two books are required for this course.
 |
(1) Pomeroy, Sarah B., et al. Ancient Greece: A Political, Social, and Cultural History. 2nd edition. New York: Oxford University Press, 2008. ISBN: 978-0-195-30800-6.
Version note: Please make sure you get the second edition. |
 |
(2) Aristophanes, and Marie C. Marianetti. The Clouds: An Annotated Translation. Lanham, Md: University Press of America, 1997. ISBN: 978-0-761-80588-5.
Version note: The play itself is widely available, but we’ll also be working with Prof. Marianetti’s annotations and interpretations, so you’ll need to get this version. It’s regularly assigned in her classes, so it should be readily available used. |
Both books are available from Lehman College Bookstore, either on person or via their website, as well as through online retailers.

Hi folks. Here are the books you’ll need for Civilizations of the Ancient World (HIS 246).
Three books are required for this course.
 |
(1) Nagle, D. Brendan. The Ancient World: A Social and Cultural History, 7th edition. New York: Prentice Hall, 2010. ISBN: 978-0-205-63744-7.
Version note: This is a new edition for this year. If you buy a used copy, make sure it’s the 7th edition. If it’s an earlier version, it may not contain the same material or have the same page numbers. |
 |
(2) George, Andrew R. The Epic of Gilgamesh. London: Penguin Books, 2003. ISBN: 978-0-140-44919-8.
Version note: Penguin has more than one Gilgamesh. I strongly recommend the Andrew George edition because he translated directly from the source. It also has a useful introduction. If you get another edition, make sure it is based on the Standard Version of the epic. There is not a trustworthy version online, so you’re best off with the Penguin. |
 |
(3) Aristophanes, and Marie C. Marianetti. The Clouds: An Annotated Translation. Lanham, Md: University Press of America, 1997. ISBN: 978-0-761-80588-5.
