HIS 246 - Fall 2010

Hi folks. Here are the books you’ll need for Civilizations of the Ancient World (HIS 246).

These have been ordered from the Lehman College Bookstore, but their supply (especially of new copies) may be limited. As an alternative, you can order these books easily online, both used and new. Just make sure (a) you get the right version, and (b) that you leave enough time for shipping so that you have your books in hand by the time the course starts on August 30. Convenient Amazon links are at the bottom of this post.

Three books are required for this course.

Textbook (Nagle) (1) Nagle, D. Brendan.
The Ancient World: A Social and Cultural History, 7th edition.
New York: Prentice Hall, 2010.
ISBN: 978-0-205-63744-7.

Version note: This is a new edition for this year. If you buy a used copy, make sure it’s the 7th edition. If it’s an earlier version, it may not contain the same material or have the same page numbers.

Gilgamesh (2) George, Andrew R.
The Epic of Gilgamesh.
London: Penguin Books, 2003.
ISBN: 978-0-140-44919-8.

Version note: Penguin has more than one Gilgamesh. I strongly recommend the Andrew George edition because he translated directly from the source. It also has a useful introduction. If you get another edition, make sure it is based on the Standard Version of the epic. There is not a trustworthy version online, so you’re best off with the Penguin.

Aristophanes (3) Aristophanes, and Marie C. Marianetti.
The Clouds: An Annotated Translation
.
Lanham, Md: University Press of America, 1997.
ISBN: 978-0-761-80588-5.

Version note: The play itself is widely available, but we’ll also be working with Prof. Marianetti’s annotations and interpretations, so you’ll need to get this version. It’s regularly assigned in her classes, so it should be readily available used.

All three books are available from Lehman College Bookstore, either on person or via their website, as well as through online retailers.
